Bite. Yeah, bite. Bite is Deja Voodoo Spells‘ (DVS) second offering, after their debut album ‘I am what I am‘ 5 years ago. Clearly, everyone knows that DVS’ lead guitarist, Rithan, is one of Malaysia’s top guitarist, who is also sponsored by Ibanez Guitars.
If you have expected to get more of ‘I am what I am‘ in the second album, then sorry to say, but you won’t. It’s more of what St. Anger was to the previous Metallica albums. Well, just sort of, not exactly. So, what has exactly changed in the 5 years between the first album and this one?
The album has already caught the attention of millions, with singles ‘Rock and Roll‘ and ‘Wanting You‘ voted to the number 1 spot on the Malaysian charts, Hitz Fm’s International Top 30 and an Anugerah Industri Music (AIM) nomination for Best Male Vocal. Bite was also nominated for 9 Voize Independent Music Awards, the most nominations for a single artiste, and ended up winning the most awards of the nights as well, including Best Rock Act.
The band have already won more than 10 awards, including Best New Artiste for their debut ‘I am what I am‘ at the 2006 AIMs. They are endorsed by Ibanez Guitars, Tama Drums, Wagen Picks and Ziljian Cymbals.
Homegrown paid its tribute to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson by holding a 2 hour tribute on the 7th of August at the Audition Hall at Wisma Bentley. The free concert featured 11 local acts of various genres each performing a different Michael Jackson song in the performer’s individual style and flavor.
It was a well staged event with 400 guests of all walks of life attending. No, this wasn’t your average rock gig. Parents came with children, artists and singers, VIPs, music fans, and everyone in between. The spread of the H1N1 virus was taken into consideration and temperature checks were conducted just before entering the auditorium.
The event started at 8.30pm with hosts Qi and local beauty Sarah Lian. The first act of the day was Asian Percussion Unit and they performed a medley of Shake Your Body & Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough through their unique beats and variety of instruments.

The first show for the Stereopath event series that night consisted of Bus Company, John’s Mistress and Deja Voodoo Spells. As it was for the Stereopath event, it was also the first major gig for Bus Company. John’s Mistress will be playing for the second time in Laundry, the first time being just a couple of weeks back.
The night started at 10pm as usual, and there was a slight crowd at the venue. Not jam packed, but just nice. Not enough to fill the front of the stage though. Bus Company had the first slot and performed a really solid set. The lead vocalist (and guitarist) has great showmanship
It’s a bit late to post this flyer, but I will do it anyway. John’s Mistress are playing again, but the headliner would be Deja Voodoo Spells!
Will check it out and see if Deja Voodoo will play any new material from their upcoming album.
