Fans of American rock band Paramore in Malaysia and the region will be able to catch the American rock band live when they are here for ‘Paramore Live in Kuala Lumpur 2010’. The concert, scheduled for 19 October 2010, will be held at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil here.

‘Paramore Live in Kuala Lumpur 2010’ is presented by Tune Talk, the country’s fastest growing prepaid mobile service. Tune Tones (formerly known as Tune Entertainment), another member of Tune Group of Companies, has come on board as co-organiser while AirAsiaRedTix is the official ticketing agent.

Paramore’s new album Brand New Eyes, co-produced by the band and Rob Cavello (Green Day, My Chemical Romance), whom they also worked with on the track “Decode” from the double-platinum soundtrack from the movie Twilight the album is also the first disc to officially feature new guitarist Taylor York. This album also showcases the band’s versatility driving fast anthems like “Ignorance” and also ballads such as “Misguided Ghosts”.

The Album Leaf is the solo project of Jimmy LaValle, a San Diego-based songwriter who began recording solo material one year after forming the post-rock band Tristeza. Inspired by a number of genres — classical, jazz, and post-rock among them — LaValle constructed his own songs in a similarly eclectic manner, utilizing everything from ambient noise to field recordings to radio transmissions.

The music of The Album Leaf has been described as “celestial”, “ethereal”, “lustrous” and having a “calm ferocity” in recordings. But performing live, the act creates a soundscape and vibe on a whole new level of experience.

Following the great response of their recent comeback shows in Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau, Hong Kong seminal hip-hop group LMF (or also known as Lazy Mutha Fucka) is set to take KL by storm!

After a lapse of 7 years, the group will be presenting their THE WILD LAZY TOUR concert series to audience in Malaysia.

The organizers of LMF THE WILD LAZY TOUR KL 2010 are excited to announce LMF one night only concert in Kuala Lumpur, the group are bringing their distinctive blend of hip-hop, hardcore rap, metal and funk to the KL Live concert hall on 4th September 2010.

Yuna officially launched her debut album titled Decorate recently at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Center (KLPAC for short) which was located at Sentul. It was a 2 day affair and was held on the 23rd and 24th of July, with the performances starting at 9pm on both days.

Upon arriving at the car park I could sense that Pentas 1 will be completely filled up as I had to park on the road shoulder. I wasn’t sure whether it was filled to the brim on the first day, but boy it was nearly filled up on the second day.

Yuna started her set without any delays whatsoever at 9pm sharp with Someone Out Of Town. The stage setup was simple. Yes, simple it was, but it was filled up with musicians! There were 2 guitarists, a bassist, a backup vocalist, keyboardist, percussionist, drummer and of course Yuna herself taking center stage behind the monitors. There was space on the left side for 3 additional string players for later in the set.

The first set of the night consisted of songs such as the familiar Rocket (a song written about her guitar) and Gadis Semasa, a very pop-ish Super Something (which was co-produced by AG of Hujan), and also Greek Goddess and Sparkle. During the song Sparkle, Hanafi of Estranged appeared on stage to provide additional guitars! There was also a song called Permission (which is also on the album), which was inspired by the song, Here In My Room by Incubus.

Merchandise on sale. You can get her album, titled Decorate at her shop, iamjetfuel located at SS15. The album should cost RM25, and has 10 tracks + 1 hidden track (okay, I will burst the bubble here, the hidden song is actually an acoustic version of Dan Sebenarnya). Get it! Yes, you must get it!

The people

After a short 20 minute break, Yuna continued onto her second set where she played a couple more songs from her album, which included Fireworks, These Streets, Penakut (the build up for this song is really, really awesome!), Cinta Sempurna and Random Awesome.

Dan Sebenarnya was an interesting affair as Yuna used the effects pedal to loop her voice, using it as backing vocals as she sang the intro of the song. Really good work there!

The violins and cello players came up for the song Random Awesome, the closing song for the night, which was about 2 people meeting each other, and well, which hopefully turned into something awesome.

There was an autograph session after the show, and heck the queue stretched from the ticketing table right until outside the door of the building!

It was not really a battle of Hujan versus Bunkface but it was more of a collaboration between the two local heavy weights. It was a 2 day affair, which was held over the weekend of the 10th and 11th of July 2010 at KL Live.

It was a night of chaos, in a good way, as Hujan and Bunkface took turns to play songs from each others repertoire. Hujan was situated on the left side of the stage while Bunkface were positioned on the right.

The gig started with Hujan opening the gig with Revolusi, which was then followed up by Bunkface playing Aku Scandal. The crowd was already going wild from the start, a good sign which followed through into the night.

There was an interlude halfway in between the show where each member of the band had to outdo the opposing band member on his particular instrument. For Noh and Sam though, they didn’t battle it out on the mics, but instead they took it to the drums! Hilarious!

When Dimas was on, he threw on Mizz Nina‘s What You Waiting For (Mizz Nina was up above in the VIP are) and when Noh also did a short version of Dan Sebenarnya as a tribute to Yuna who was standing among the crowd downstairs.

On the second half of the night, older songs such as Lonely Soldier Boy, Pagi Yang Gelap and Empayarmu were played. Bunkface also played their TM promotional song, Through My Window.

To top things up, the finale was a real party ON THE STAGE. There were cameos of all sorts, including Mohd Jayzuan, and also ex-Hujan bassist Dukegong. At that point, there was like more than 10 people running around the stage while playing the songs Ludah Amerika before ending the night with Situasi.

After the gig, there was a mini-party to celebrate Dimas’ birthday (during the 2nd night which was on 11th of July) and then there was an autograph session for fans to get their stuff signed by both Hujan and Bunkface band members.

It was a really hot day but it didn’t stop people from gathering around the Lawn Stage. The concert and music areas were not free, you needed to buy tickets to access them though. The lawn stage was where most of the live music took part, featuring acts such as An Honest Mistake and Kyoto Protocol but the charmers for noon were the ladies, Najwa, Yuna, and Liyana Fizi!

Yuna brought out a friend for a duet as well.

Over at Pentas 1 (inside the main building, with air-con!), there was Arabyrd, Figure of Speech and also Monoloque performing. I missed Arabyrd as I was watching the presentation by my very good buddies over at RupaJiwa Studios. Check them out at http://rupajiwa.wordpress.com/

Rapper Figure of Speech (Japanese dude, not sure a Malaysian citizen or what) performed a pleasant set with songs touching (but not offending) on race, religion, politics, gender and environmental issues.

Monoloque did a collaboration with dancer January Low. January danced (well, not your typical dance routines) through all the songs, very interesting indeed.

During the evening/night, bands such as Khottal, SevenCollar T-shirt, Bittersweet and Couple took stage.

SevenCollar T-shirt played a very solid set which included songs from their latest album, The Great Battle such as Fragile, TET Offensive, Wild Child and Lucky You.

Bittersweet, with fans familiar with their new line up (Fizan on vocals and Moon ex-The Times was on guitars) were also on the same routine, performing almost all new songs which included Knights of the Round Table, Burn Berlin Burn before ending with Kuching Hitam as usual.

Couple was the last band of the night, but I had to go back early as I had to attend the Standard Chartered KL Marathon a few hours after that.

It has been 1 month since Urbanscapes, sorry for the delay, but yeah Urbanscapes 2010 was held on the 27th of June 2010 at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Center (KLPAC for short), Sentul. Last year’s Urbanscapes was also held at the same venue.

One interesting event which happened this year was the ‘Project Angkat Rumah‘ event, where approximately 250 people carried a small wooden house (a real small one, no rooms) from Sekolah Kebangsaan Sentul Utama at Jalan Ipoh to KLPAC.

There was obstacles along the way such as overhead signs and also power cables which prevented the house from continuing its journey. Luckily they managed to find a detour which successfully brought the house to the entrance of KLPAC where the almighty guard house was awaiting.

Fortunately the organisers foresaw this and prepared a crane to hoist the house over the guardhouse, allowing the people to continue carrying the wooden house towards its final destination, which was inside KLPAC.

Perfect weather, hot sun, clear blue skies and large puffy clouds made it an exciting afternoon for everyone at Urbanscapes.

The marketplace outside had booths practically everywhere. T-shirts, accessories and merchandise.

Inside the building, there was art installations and yet more booths selling t-shirts, plushies and one interesting one, selling notebooks, featuring a special Moleskine notebook, which is a collaboration between Cziplee and Moleskine.

There was also a Yasmin Ahmad screening where several of her previous movies were shown. Interestingly, the screening was free for the public!

Yuna the accidental singer-songwriter from Subang Jaya, Selangor, has come a long way and is now back with a full-length album. After releasing her self-titled EP in 2008, Yuna introduces ‘Decorate‘ a compilation of some of her favourite songs she wrote over the years, enabling her to share something more than what people knew of her from ‘Dan Sebenarnya‘.

Supported by her band, fans are invited to join her in this ‘story-telling’ session where she will be showcasing some of her earliest songs as well as new materials that she has brought back from an intensive songwriting period in L.A.

Watch Yuna as she changes her colours, as all good chameleons do, from danceable materials to darker ones and be dazzled by her performance.

It was a relaxing and entertaining 24th of June night, as Tokyo Blue and The Rhapsody played a host of jazz, nu-jazz, and lounge tunes.

Tokyo Blue, if you haven’t already heard of them or watched them perform, is an all-instrument band, with Hiro on the bass, Josh on the drums and Ywenna on the keyboards. Ywenna wasn’t there that night though.

Tokyo Blue started out with Circle, and then going into Before Dawn and a couple of  their originals before ending their set with 3 Miles. They also threw in Jaco Pastorius‘ The Chicken into their set!

After Tokyo Blue, it was time for Rhapsody, also a jazzy band, but this time with vocals which was done by Nicole. The Rhapsody’s set was really easy going, flowing from one song into another, with jokes thrown in by bassist-cum-comedian, Kevin.

They played a few covers including Indie Arie‘s I’m Not My Hair, Colin Bailey Rae‘s Munich and then continued on with some originals, the interesting one being ‘You Look Better When You Are Naked‘. The crowd didn’t let them go when they ended their set that night and demanded for more! Good on ya! As a response, Rhapsody adhoc-ly decided to play Maroon 5‘s Sunday Morning for the encore.
