FOLLOW THE LIGHT ~ a musical

Posted by kenchill. Categories Events, Featured, Flyers

Follow The Light, directed by Colin Kirton, is an original Malaysian musical with script, music and lyrics by Nick Choo. It retells the story of Christmas through songs that range from pop, rock and funk, R&B and hip-hop, to jazz, gospel and emotive ballad.

The cast of Follow The Light comprises both established performing artistes as well as newcomers: AIM (Malaysian Music Industry) award-winning singer Juwita Suwito plays the role of Mary, a young woman who is unexpectedly told that she is about to have a baby. Singer-musician Aaron Khaled – a rising personality on the performing arts horizon – plays Joe, a frazzled carpenter who frets over the prospect of impending fatherhood. Breaking the news to them is the suave Angel Gabe, played by American stage director and performer Tim Howe.

The three best friends (the Wise Men) from the ghetto will be played by AIM award-winning R&B recording artiste Liang, stage and television actor Xavier Wong, and up-and-coming singer-songwriter Tony Leo Selvaraj. Other notable performers who will be performing in the show are singer-songwriter Zalina Lee, Rydee Anna Abdul, Adrien Zaffri, Anrie Too, Song-Fan Seah and Suzan Manen.

Follow The Light is produced by Kirton’s and Choo’s newly established production companies, Kirton Call Productions and Nick Knack Productions respectively, and is supported by Tupperware Brands.

While still a student in Perth, Australia, Choo staged an earlier version of Follow The Light in 2005 as a university-level production. Even then, it captured the hearts of audiences and critics: the production won under the Best Musical category in Western Australia’s Finley Awards for Independent Theatre, and Choo received a special adjudicators’ certificate for overall construction (music and lyrics).

Choo and Kirton are aware of the realities of the country’s troubled racial-religious landscape. Nevertheless, they hope that in this time of conflict and discord surrounding religion in this country, the cast, crew and creative team of Follow The Light will make a powerful statement that Malaysians of all backgrounds can still come together to experience this story, laugh at the humour, groove along to the music, and, ultimately, be touched by the sentiments – love, compassion, forgiveness and significance – that Christmas, like every other religious celebration, encourages.
