Ne-Yo at Sunway Lagoon

Posted by kenchill. Categories Event Coverage, Events, Featured, Music

Ne-Yo performed at the Sunway Lagoon Surf Beach on the 7th of January 2010 as part of his Year Of The Gentleman Tour. The concert was scheduled to start at 8pm but the crowd began to queue up at the Sunway Lagoon entrance by 6pm. The concert was organised by PhuturePhlow and co-sponsored by Celcom X-pax and Sunway Lagoon.

The over excited crowd was tagged with X-pax stickers by the unique rollerblading X-pax promoters.

The entrance beside Ministry of Sound was for the VIP ticket holders as well as the media.

Prem, of Fly FM took some time before the event started to hype up the crowd.

At 8.30pm, Najwa, came on stage as the opening act. The jazz songstress delivered a really strong a solid performance. Her band was also very talented as they showcased very strong musical skills.

By the time Najwa reached her fourth song, the crowd couldn’t wait any longer and started to call for Ne-Yo instead.

It took Ne-Yo about 10 minutes to appear on stage after Najwa left, and when he did, the crowd exploded into cheers. He made his appearance with a Michael Jackson styled/tribute dance in which he showcased MJ’s signature moves and poses. There was the forward-tilted hat, pointed fingers, gliding around the stage, but alas, no moonwalk. The night will continue to be filled with tributes to the late King Of Pop as Ne-Yo hailed Michael Jackson as one of his greatest inspirations.

He then went into the first song, Because Of You, accompanied by dancers on the stage. After a few songs, Ne-Yo’s protege, Jadyn Maria came on stage to sing Good Girls Like Bad Boys, in which she thanked the audience for allowing her to do so.

After that, Ne-Yo continued to amaze the crowd with his popular songs such as Sexy Love, Mad, Part Of The List, So Sick, and also Irreplaceable, a song he wrote for Beyonce, because, according to Ne-Yo,  it was more suited for a female to sing it. He also sang Take A Bow, which was also written by Ne-Yo for Rihanna.

There was about 8,000 – 10,000 people in the crowd that night. Just slightly less than that of Akon‘s.

During the second half of the night, he continued to belt out more songs, accompanied by dancers on every other song. Among the other songs he sang that night were Wedding, Let Me Love You, Go On Girl, Knock You Down, So You Can Cry, and Stop This World.

There was a short interlude just before the concert ended in which the band played a medley of Michael Jackon songs. Ne-Yo came back in a singlet and then sang Ms. Independent, before leaving the stage while the crowd cheered for an encore.

During the encore, he sang Never Knew I Needed and also Closer, with the stage filled with dancers and him holding a pimp stick.

Right after he ushered his dancers off stage and thanked his band, he slowly walked off stage and it was off to the after party at Euphoria, Ministry Of Sound.

Oh, and thanks to the heavens that it did not rain that night!
