The first XGIG for 2009 was held at Aloha, Melaka on the 7th of March, which is of course, organised by XFM (formerly XFresh FM). Thanks to the free entrance, loads of gig goers packed the venue even before the event started.

Venue

I managed to arrive just slightly before 2pm and when the clock struck 2, there was already a long queue outside the entrance to the venue. The entrance is well, kinda cool as it has a beachfront to the side of it, complete with a large swimming pool and coconut trees. The sunny afternoon made it feel like a holiday by the seaside.

After getting the media tags from Loy (Loy’s the man yo!) I got inside the venue and the last band was in there finishing their soundcheck. The doors were opened to the crowd at around 2.20pm and one by one, they started coming in. It was slow though, as they had to perform checks on everybody, person by person. It took quite a while for the front of the stage to fill.

So, time was ticking and the event had to start, so Broken Riff came on stage and warmed up the audience with 3 songs, namely Wanted, Falling and Open Your Eyes. It did not take long for the audience to warm up and start to shake the sole barrier in front of the stage.

Second band of the day was Radio Flyer whose guitarist was wearing nice yellow boots and staged dived into the crowd just before their set ended.

While waiting for bands to setup, XFM announcers came on stage to ask questions and gave away free t-shirts. I think they gave away like 20 t-shirts that day.

Shac & Haniff

The Rhaman (EP out, go get it!) was next and they did not disappoint either. Lead singer was smartly dressed in a white shirt and pin-striped shorts.

At this time, I decided to make my way to the middle of the venue (behind the mosh pit) to take photographs at a different angle. Mind you, the event was packed as hell and navigating my way through was quite hard. People were still trickling in and were directed to walk along the side and to the back. There was almost 1,200 people in the venue.

Crowd

Robot Asmara came up next to continue the mood of female singers and gave the crowd a feel of some disco-rock styled music.

After all the rocking, it was time for some ska and Skudap Skudip delivered it. A real solid performance by them and the crowd were loving it, thanks to Skalalala and also Mari Berdanska.

They also played Mamamu Benci Aku. ah_mei was loving the blow keyboard brought up on stage by lead singer, Dodd.

It was time for another band with a female lead, as Joanna & Co. came up on stage. Joanna was swaying and shaking her body and the crowd loved it.

Reggae time? You bet it is. Pure Vibracion gave the crowd somemore skanking and dancing with Pesan Nenek and Mi Gal.

And it was time for the final band who was none other than Bunkface. They managed to play 3 songs, BUNKFACE, Revolusi and of course, Situasi.

Heck, the crowd was really, really pumped up by this time and the moshing and crowd surfing was at its maximum. Some dudes even jumped off a table, onto the crowd, damaging the table in the process.  Not to mention that this made the chief security really tense and angry.

The event managed to end at 5.45pm, just in time for the venue staff to clean it up and get ready for the night.
