Finally after waiting for slightly more than 1 month, the Peleng 8mm/f3.5 circular fisheye lens has arrived!

My initial plan was to get the Sony SAL16F28 16mm/f2.8 fisheye lens which, according to the salesman at a camera shop in Sungei Wang was around RM2,400 – RM2,600. Not bad, considering the RRP is RM3,600. Before I managed to save that amount of money, I plonked whatever cash I had on the Minolta 50mm/f1.7.

Anyway, the idea of getting the fisheye lens was still lingering around. After some research on the internet, I came across a few other alternatives. They were the Sigma 15mm/f2.8, Zenitar 15mm/f2.8 and the Peleng 8mm/f3.5 circular fisheye. I soon went around town asking for the price of the Sigma 15mm and none of the shops stock them, but they gave me a quote of something between RM1,200 – RM1,600.

I then went back to the internet to do some research on the other 2 choices, the Zenitar 16mm and the Peleng 8mm, both of which are on the M42 mount. At first, I was more interested in the Zenitar 16mm (I don’t know why) but after finding out that the Peleng was actually a circular fisheye (as compared to the other fisheyes), heck, it became my ultimate target. The full circular image will only appear on 35mm film or on full frame digital SLRS. On APS-C DSLRs, the image is cropped out. On the Sony Alpha sensors, the crop still leaves a nice vignetting on the corner of the photo, which I like.

The fisheye effect on the Peleng is much apparent than the Zenitar or the Sony lenses. On cropped sensors, the Zenitar has little fisheye effect and it is just slightly wider than my Sony SAL1870 kit lens which is 18mm at its widest. The Sony, well, the price is just too high to justify its purchase.

Now comes the hardest part, acquiring the lens right here in Malaysia. No shops sell them. And the only reference to someone in Malaysia who actually has the lens was Albert, of Glaring Notebook Cubed. If you guys remember, he lent me his Peleng during the X-Gig event at Zouk about 2 months back. Heck, maybe he was just trying to poison me, lending me his lens for like 15 minutes, and then asking it back, injecting a nice dose of poison, making me want more.

I actually came across Albert’s posting on his blog (http://glaringnotebook.com/Default.asp?id=877) when I was searching for it in Google and after asking him about it, he pointed me to Soulfly, who does some lens trading and is based in Malaysia! Check out his trade thread here http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/624606. So, after getting some poison from Albert in August, I decided to take the plunge in September and deposited some cash to Soulfly and he promptly placed an order for the Peleng 8mm lens for me.

I wasn’t really in a rush to use the lens, so I waited, and waited. Hari Raya came, and the Kastam will be off for quite a while and the postage system will be quite sluggish during the Raya festive season as most of the staff will be on leave. And behold, the package finally reached Soulfly just after Raya and he quickly shipped it to me via Pos Laju from Miri the next day. Luckily Miri has a Pejabat Pos Laju (PPL) and the Pos Laju office which services my area is also a PPL, therefore ensuring a next day delivery.

My Peleng 8mm fisheye lens!

Sticking to its words, Pos Laju delivered the package to my house the next day! Awesomeness. Congratulations Pos Laju on the efficient service! Oh, I forgot to mention the tracking service. It works! Just checkout the screenshot, it is quite self explanatory.

After checking the box, I found the Kastam stamp and it read ‘Dilepaskan 20 September’. What? That was before Raya! I wonder what happened in that 10 days before Raya. I will leave the unboxing of the Peleng 8mm fisheye lens to another post as this one is already quite long. Stick with me.
