Another A300

Posted by kenchill. Categories Photography, Products

We welcome another member of our blog, supaa_dry into the Sony Alpha DSLR user group! As soon as kumbang got his own Sony Alph A300 DSLR camera, supaa_dry could not resist the temptation and bought one for himself as well.

So far so good, and it seems that supaa_dry’s dad was once a Minolta SLR user as well. From the SLR camera he acquired from his dad, it seems that it was from the pre-auto focus generation, before Konica and Minolta merged.

Anyhow, I believe that we can get some convertors so that we can use the old Minolta lenses, full manual controls! Can’t wait to see what other Minolta gems we can find.

We could not purchase the A300 without the kit lens, so now we have 3 SAL1870 kit lenses of which, only supaa_dry is using as he does not have any other lenses to replace the kit lens. Kumbang is using the Minolta 35-70mm/f4 AF lens as his primary lens and I am using my trusty Minolta 50mm/f1.7 AF lens as my primary lens. The Beercan? Well, it has yet to be used in any events or gigs, October here we come!

Hmmm if you are a guy, it’s better to get a slightly larger DSLR. Small DSLR might be more portable, but when you are holding it for long periods of time, you might face hand/finger cramps.

    Get the A200! Quick!

[...] Naturally, the first stall we went to was the bunga api store! Unfortunately by the time we came the guy selling it had finished a lot of his stock so we just ended up buying some pop-pop and bumblebees. Kenchill had actually written about it earlier in his post Another A300 [...]

Actually, the only stuff that came out of Konica Minolta were digital SLRs… Minolta made manual focus SLRs until they came out with the Minolta 7000 AF in 1985 (first ever proper AF SLR!) Then Honeywell sued every SLR maker for using the phase-detect autofocus which they supposedly patented despite not even making cameras! Minolta fought back but went broke. Konica bought them, and Konica Minolta was born, where they made the Konica Minolta 7 Digital and 5 Digital. KM never made any film SLRs and Minolta made a few, very rare digital SLRs.

How about the lenses? Who made the AF lenses eh?

  7. Albert Ng - October 6, 2008 / 12:02 pm

Uh… Minolta made the AF lenses. They were called Minolta AF to distinguish them from the manual focus SR mount Minoltas (which have SR, Rokkor, MC or MD to identify them). When Konica bought them some of them got rebranded Konica Minolta but ultimately Minolta still makes them.

There are rumors that the Sony rebadges are still made by Minolta.
