Xfresh X-GIG @ Zouk, KL

Posted by ah_mei. Categories Event Coverage, Events, Music

This event was held at Zouk. We arrived at 2:45pm but there were still a whole bunch of people waiting outside. As usual, Malaysian standard time was in effect so we waited outside as well.

Be sure to give way to the Perodua Xfresh street surfers if you see them on the road. They are giving great support to our local music scene. As patriotic as you can see they already stick Malaysia flag way before Merdeka day.

Met our friend, Haniff, and he told us that this is the first time their gig got delayed but will be starting soon. There”s some booth selling T-shirt as usual, but this time we also saw some monster-like toys selling booth. Too bad for kenchill as he can”t find his red Butterfingers t-shirt there. Then we sat by the rock with a big guy, Joe. Kenchill met him back in ROTTW gig at Rawang (delay hell!!).

Before we went in Zouk, we had our IC (Identity Card) checked and we were asked to follow the “photographer line” since kenchill was holding his Sony Alpha A200 camera and ah_mei was holding the camera bag. We then got our hand “stamped” and kenchill with a “limited access” sticker on his sleeve. Later inside I managed to meet up with Loy and obtained a media pass from him. Thanks dude.

Stereo Socket (thanks to Albert for the tip!!) was up first, but I think the vocal”s voice is kinda fake though the band play was going well. But seems like the crowd likes them, they can warm up the mosh pit for the coming band.

Here comes a female vocalist band which rocked the crowd throughout their whole performance, Robot Asmara.

Then this girl also another highlight of the event, the female emcee, DJ Dina. One thing to note, the Xfresh crew were wearing the Macbeth-Xfresh t-shirts which is quite a cool collaboration. No, the throw-out freebie t-shirts were not the Macbeth collab. t-shirts, but they did give out 2 Macbeth t-shirts to some lucky dudes who got 2nd and 3rd place, the 1st place guy won an iPod Shuffle loaded with MP3s from some of the bands performing today.

The Times was up next and there goes the mosh pit and body surfing. We soon got out from the pit and went into the “limited access” area (backstage). In the end of their performance, Natazar jumped onto the crowd and body surfed. While we were snapping photos around the backstage area, another Sony Alpha user, Albert (who runs Glaring Notebook Cubed and also a moderator at Alphanatics), approached us, introduced himself and started the photography talk. Very cool guy he was.

Speaking about moshing, we must thank the security guards who protected our beloved bands on the stage. The crowd even managed to push the security barrier till it fell, the photographers even helped one of the fallen security guards to get up and continue holding up the security barrier.

After that, SevenCollar T-shirt came on stage. That”s the time Albert lent us his Peleng 8mm fisheye lens. SevenCollar is currently in the progress of recording their next album so stay tuned! Am not sure when will it be released though.

Emcee Haniff entertained the crowd with free gifts like X-fresh t-shirts and buttons.

Here comes the Killeur Calculateur. After a few minutes of sound checking and playing, they suddenly stopped as the bassist”s guitar string broke (you can see it in the photo). But they continued the show after getting a replacement guitar.

Following up was M.A.R.O. (Minority Against Radio Oppression). This was the time the crowd get some rest and push again for the next band…

Love Me Butch. This time we got a lot their photos, can check out the gallery below. When they were rocking their famous song “Hollywood Holiday“. Meng even went all the way up to the drum area and played his guitar on the top of the stage, awesome sight it was.

Butterfingers! Butterfingers are the last band for the day and as they came on stage, the crowd was cheering loudly. Emmet came up on stage with a ukulele which he then substituted for an acoustic guitar and finally a violin. Their set comprimises of songs entirely from their latest album, KEMBALI which includes Maharani and Air Liur Di Kuala Lumpur (and a few more which I sang along to but I forgot which ones, too busy taking pictures with my media pass).

The show had to end at 6:15pm because Zouk has tight time management and they have to clean up and prepare the venue for the night. Bummer. If the event started earlier, we could have gotten 2 or 3 more songs from Butterfingers!!

Anyway, after a quick chat with Albert, we parted ways and headed over to Ruums for the Levi”s 501 Live Unbuttoned event. Check out the report here

Oh hello ah_mei! What a glaring contrast to the name you introduced yourself as. ;)

The first band was Stereo Socket, and the vocalist was Emir, also of Ken’id and Throne Away.
