Lala chong

I like seafood. No wait, that’s an understatement, I LOVE seafood. And perhaps the best way to cook seafood is Chinese-style.

As with all good things, you can’t have too much of it, or not you know lah, sure muak, but I haven’t had seafood in a while so I rounded up a bunch of friends and we headed to Lala Chong for some rockin’ Chinese-style seafood. Lala Chong is located near the old Subang Airport, right opposite Terminal 3. For those of you who don’t quite know where it is, take a look at this map:

Unfortunately, my planning was quite off, I suppose, because we went on a Father’s Day weekend. This meant that the place was ridiculously full (still not as bad as Telok Gong in Klang) and we had to wait to get a table. The staff were supposed to seat us but I guess they’re not used to handling such a big crowd that they were definitely overwhelmed. It seemed like the other people (even those who came later than us) were not waiting to get a table. They were just grabbing whichever table was free and just sat down. Where can like that!!!! So in true Malaysian fashion, we decided to abandon our queue and looked for our own table!

Anyway, fast forward to the food. We ordered:

Mantis prawn with dried chillies. Interestingly enough, mantis prawns are called “lai liu ha” in cantonese, which means “urinating prawns”. I don’t know which genius came up with that name, but no, there is no pee in this dish. This dish was very nice and it was a huge portion. It was salty and spicy with a hint of sweetness.  I can’t remember the price but it was pretty cheap! Very much worth it!

Next up was… butter prawns! I believe the cantonese name is lai yao ha which means milk oil prawn. Kinda makes sense I guess since butter is more or less milk oil/fat. This dish is quite…deceiving. It looks like a lot because they have a lot of the egg-filler thingy. It’s definitely tasty but we were quite disappointed that there were only 4 prawns. 4 big prawns, but still.. only 4…

After that we had the two crab dishes. I’m personally a big fan of their kam heong hai (Golden fragrant crab), so I insisted on having that, but my friend was adamant that we try the Marmite crab as well. First thing that came to mind… YEWWW marmite! Isn’t that what the English put on their toast?  If you didn’t know, marmite is made from yeast extract.. I know, what the heck right? But I suppose Chinese people have eaten far far far crazier things. And it actually turned out really good! I don’t really quite know how to describe the taste (it’s slightly sour and salty but I can’t really place the taste), but I would definitely recommend it if you’re looking to diversify your crab-eating experience. I still prefer the kam heong hai but it’s a good 2nd crab dish to have. Btw, the kam heong hai was VERY good.  It has lots of dried shrimp which made the taste excellent. Anyway, the first picture is the marmite crab and the second is the kam heong.

And suddenly after the crabs came, our table just became really quiet because everybody was just chomping down on crabs. The only sounds that you could hear were the cracking of crab shells and the occasional hammer smashing the thick shell. Result: Humans 1: Crabs 0

Poor crabbies. Muahaha.

Anyway the bill came up to about RM150 for 2 kgs of crabs, butter prawns and the mantis prawns (and a little bit here and there for drinks). We were all very full and satisfied, all for less than RM40 a person. Not a bad deal at all! So if ever you’re craving Chinese seafood (you definitely will at some point), keep Lala chong in mind. And the best part? The next day your fingers will still smell of crab so you can relive the experience for the next 24 hours :)
