LEGO 6212 Star Wars X-Wing

Posted by kenchill. Categories Toys

When I was a kid, I used to play LEGO, lot’s of em. From castles and pirates to petrol stations to space-themed vehicles. I can’t really recall exactly at what age did I start or stop LEGO but it should be when I was around 7 to 12 years old. And yeah, I didn’t play with the Duplo blocks, just the normal LEGO. No LEGO Technics too.

Fast forward to a decade later around the year 2002 and there I saw it, while I was studying in Brisbane (Australia), LEGO Star Wars sets (well the huge ass LEGO Star Wars collector’s edition sets were way out of my budget) which were selling at ‘normal price’. I am more interested in the original Star Wars Trilogy (Episodes IV, V and VI that is) than the newer episodes. They were selling a whole bunch of vehicles like the Jedi Starfighters, Arc fighter, General Grievious’s bike, Dagobah X-Wing, TIE Fighter, TIE Interceptor and Snowspeeder, among others. I only managed to pick up the TIE Fighter (LEGO set #7263) because it was the cheapest among the vehicles that I was interested (I really wanted to get the X-Wing but it was almost 4 times more expensive the the TIE Fighter).

So there I was again, building my first LEGO set in almost 10 years together with my house mate, Vickneswaran who got himself a Jedi Starfighter set (the yellow one). We were both transported back to the time when we were small tiny kids playing with our castles and knights sets. Vickneswaran soon got himself more LEGO Star Wars sets while I came back to Malaysia after graduating.

Fast forward again to just 2 weeks back where I managed to spot a few units of the LEGO Star Wars X-Wing (#6212) sitting innocently at the Toy’s ‘r’ us in Midvalley Megamall selling for RM329.90 (hefty price indeed). Well, being a person who is already working and earning cash, it wasn’t really a problem for me and I picked it up immediately. Regretting later is much more painful, at least I can sell it off if I decided that I don’t want it (unopened, of course).

So, yeah, I opened it up, turned into a small kid again as I section the pieces strategically (a habit from young) sorted by color and size in order to ease the searching for pieces. Building it wasn’t difficult at all as it was really straightforward and there weren’t many duplicate sections to build (duplicate sections are really boring). Even though it was easy, I took my time and enjoyed every moment of it and there it was, an X-Wing with fully functional S-foils (the wings!) which you can close it for cruise mode or open it into the X-formation for attack mode.

Besides the X-Wing, the set came with Han Solo, his furry partner Chewbacca, Princess Leia, Wedge Antilles and Luke Skywalker (in orange pilot suit) of course. Oh, there’s also R2-D2 which seats behind the cockpit! The set came with extra pieces in which you can use it to modify the markings on the X-Wing to turn it into the Red 3 which Wedge pilots or the Red 5 which Luke pilots.

Now, my LEGO X-Wing vs TIE Fighter set is complete!

Wedge is the pilot of Red 3 which is in the Red squadron that Luke is also in when attacking the Death Star (trench run!)
